How many wings for 20 people?

Two hundred pieces if wings are the meal, one hundred if they're sharing the coffee table with pizza and seven-layer dip. Here's the chart for 10 to 50 people, the pounds to buy, the sauce and ranch math, and how to cook that many without a fryer.

Wings per person

Restaurants and caterers plan 10 wing pieces per adult when wings are the main food — that's about a pound of raw wings each, and it's what a hungry adult eats when nothing else is competing. When wings are one item on a game-day spread with pizza, sliders, chips and dips, most people eat 5–6 pieces. Kids eat about half of either number; teenagers and anyone who came straight from playing eat more than 10, so bump them up 20%.

Twenty people, then: 200 pieces as the main (about 22 lb) or 100 pieces as a side (about 11 lb). Those totals are in pieces — flats and drumettes — because that's how party wings are sold and how restaurants count them.

How many wings in a pound

A pound of whole chicken wings is 4–5 wings. Each whole wing yields a flat and a drumette (the tip goes to stock or the trash), so a pound is 8–10 pieces. Pre-cut "party wings" run the same count per pound with no waste; whole wings need about 10% extra for the tips you'll trim. Frozen pre-cooked wings shrink about 25% on reheating, so buy 25% more by weight. Buying from a warehouse club? A 10-lb bag of party wings is roughly 90 pieces — two bags for the 20-person main-dish plan.

Super Bowl specifics

Americans eat around 1.4 billion wings on Super Bowl Sunday, and the average watch party is 10–20 people with wings, pizza, chili or sliders, chips and dips, and a dessert. For that spread, use the side-dish column: 100 pieces for 20 people. Then pizza at 2 slices per person (5 large pizzas for 20), one big pot of chili (6 quarts), two dips with 3 lb of chips, and drinks at 2 the first hour and 1 per hour after — about 80 drinks over a 3½-hour game plus pregame. Kickoff is around 6:30 p.m. Eastern, so people arrive hungry; put the wings and pizza out at kickoff and the dessert at halftime.

Sauces, dips and sides

  • Sauce: ¼ cup per 10 wings if you toss. Offer three: classic buffalo (about half the wings), a sweet one (honey BBQ, garlic parmesan, sweet chili), and a hot one. For 200 wings, that's 100 buffalo, 60 sweet, 40 hot. Serve extra sauce on the side.
  • Ranch and blue cheese: 1 cup per 40 wings, split between the two. Two 16-oz bottles of each covers 200 wings with room for the celery.
  • Celery and carrots: one bunch of celery and 1 lb of carrot sticks per dozen guests — 2 bunches and 2 lb for 20.
  • Napkins and wet wipes: 5 napkins per person. Put a roll of paper towels on the table too; nobody will judge.

Cooking 200 wings without a fryer

Two hundred wings is 22 pounds — more than any home fryer handles in a sane amount of time. The oven does it: pat the wings dry, toss with 1 Tbsp baking powder (not soda) and 1 tsp salt per 2 lb, spread on wire racks over sheet pans (about 25 pieces per half-sheet pan), and roast at 425°F for 40–45 minutes, flipping once, until 165°F and crisp. A standard oven holds 3–4 racks, so 200 wings is two rounds of about 45 minutes. Sauce right before serving; hold the second batch unsauced in a 200°F oven. An air fryer does 15–20 wings per batch in 20 minutes — fine for 10 people, painful for 20. A grill works too: indirect heat at 400°F for 30–35 minutes, then over the flame for char.

Ordering out instead: most wing chains sell 50- and 100-piece party packs. Two 100-piece orders feed 20 as the main; one covers the side-dish plan. Order 30–45 minutes before kickoff — they're slammed on Super Bowl Sunday, so many shops want the order placed a day ahead.
