How many wings per person

The standard rule from restaurants and caterers: 10 wing pieces per adult when wings are the main dish, which is about a pound of raw wings each. When wings share the table with pizza, dips, sliders and chips — the typical Super Bowl spread — 5–6 pieces per person is plenty. Kids eat about half. Teenagers and anyone who came straight from a game will eat more than 10, so use the hungry-crowd option.

How many wings in a pound

A pound of whole chicken wings is about 4–5 wings. Each whole wing separates into a flat and a drumette (the tip is usually discarded or saved for stock), so a pound gives you 8–10 pieces. The calculator uses 9 pieces per pound. If you buy pre-cut party wings, the count per pound is the same; if you buy whole wings, add about 10% for the tips you'll cut off. Frozen pre-cooked wings lose roughly 25% of their weight when reheated, so buy heavier.

Sauce, dip and sides

  • Sauce: about 1/4 cup (2 oz) per 10 wings if you toss them. A 12-oz bottle covers roughly 50 wings. Offer two or three: classic buffalo, a sweet one (honey BBQ or garlic parmesan), and a hot one.
  • Blue cheese / ranch: about 1 cup per 40 wings. Put out both — the debate is eternal.
  • Celery and carrots: one bunch of celery and one pound of carrots per dozen guests.
  • Napkins: more than you think. Plan five per person.

Cooking wings for a crowd

Wings for 20+ people are easier in the oven or an air fryer than a fryer. Pat them dry, toss with a little baking powder and salt, and roast at 425°F on wire racks for 40–45 minutes, flipping once, until crisp and at least 165°F inside. Toss in sauce right before serving. Keep a second batch warm in a 200°F oven and sauce it fresh when the first tray empties. Restaurant wings are usually cheaper than you'd think for big orders — most places offer 50- and 100-piece party trays, and the calculator's totals map straight onto those.
